At our nursery school, the 2-day parents take turns providing juice and a snack for the children. Here are some guidelines for providing nutritious and interesting snacks when it is your turn! ** Please note, our location at Advent Lutheran School is a peanut-free environment, so please remember this when preparing your snacks.
- We would like to encourage nutritious snacks. Here are some suggestions:
- Fresh Fruits
- Fresh Vegetables
- Raisins
- Dried Fruits
- Applesauce
- Cheese
- Popcorn
- Deviled Eggs
- Hardboiled Eggs
- Gelatin Squares
- Cottage Cheese
- Muffins
- Pudding
- Pizza (made with English Muffins)
Salty, very sweet and non-nutritive snacks are not recommended (candy, chips, non nutritive cookies, etc.)
Think about presentation, and make good foods appealing with clever serving ideas, such as food in the shape of animals, decorations such as faces, drinks with colorful straws, food coloring to match holidays, etc.
Limit the amount of the snack so that the children will not "overstuff" themselves. For most snacks, allot one or two per child.
The snack and juice parents might want to coordinate with each other. Some snacks go better with milk (such as cupcakes), but a snack made of milk (such as pudding) might go better with juice.
You are the snack
person for your child's birthday. For this special day, special
treats and sweets are acceptable. If you bake cupcakes, the
small size is the best for the children to handle.
It is amazing how
much the children enjoy making their snacks. Cooking
experiences are fun and we can never have too many. Use your
imagination and see what you can create!
If you are feeling uncreative in the snack department, or are eager for some new ideas, there is a snack file available at school.
